Day 4 of the overseas program included a visit to a local school and participation in actual classes. Upon arrival, the day began with an hour of yoga — challenging the “Sun Salutation pose” that offers thanks to the sun god Surya, a precious experience of aligning mind and body in a sacred atmosphere. After brunch, students learned about India’s economy, politics, and relations with Japan. Though they thought they understood their own country, they realized there was still much to learn — a deep learning time. In the following math class, a calculation contest with Indian students took place. Surprised by their speed, our students still enjoyed the challenge and deepened exchange. In the Japanese culture introduction time, students presented Japan’s clothing, food, and housing through quizzes and presentations. Indian students showed even more interest than expected, greatly encouraging our students. After a break, students visited a temple dedicated to the god Vishnu with over 1,500 years of history — a valuable opportunity to feel India’s culture and faith cultivated over long history. Dinner was traditional dishes such as pani puri and paddu at the school cafeteria, closing a fulfilling day.
